Native Doesn’t Mean Expert

We often have American contacts review the English we’ve translated or written to ensure its accuracy. Anyone involved in international business has probably encountered this situation at least a few times. If English is written by someone who hasn’t lived in the United States, it might include expressions that native speakers wouldn’t naturally use, even if it’s grammatically correct. Many people feel reassured when it’s checked by a native speaker.

However…

Being a native speaker doesn’t guarantee expertise in English grammar, spelling, copywriting, or business terminology. In fact, most native speakers are not experts in these areas.

The same applies in Japan. From what we know, the majority of native Japanese speakers don’t have a perfect command of correct Japanese.

Don’t rely too heavily on native speakers for checks. It’s crucial to assess the person’s language proficiency level as well.
